Spain is a country rich in tradition, famous for it's colorful bullfights, sunny climate and beautiful storybook castles. Spain is the third largest country in Europe in area. Spain is divided into provinces. Mainland Spain consists of 47 provinces; the Cannary Islands, and the Balearic Islands. The national government appoints a governor for each province. the people of each province elect the members of a provincial assembly. Voters in cities and towns elect a city of town council. Each city and town has a mayor. Mayors of communities with more than 10,000 people are elected by the people.

People in the cities still follow a number of age-old customs in addition to the lates trends. Spaniards enjoy a paseo (walk), before their evening meal, which they often do not eat until 10 or 11 p.m. Spanish people also go to sidewalk cafes, bars, and clubs, where they visit with friends and drink coffee, soft drinks, or wine. Spaniards enjoy seafood, which is inexpensive and plentiful in the coastal waters. A popular dish is paella. It consists of such foods as shrimp, lobster, chicken, ham and vegetables, all combined with rice that has been cooked with flavoring called saffron. Other favorite Spanish dishes include squids, crabs, sardines and fried baby eels. A popular dish during warm weather is gazpacho, a cold soup made of strained tomatoes, olive oil, and spices.
After getting settled into your villa, make sure you enjoy The Prado in Madrid, Spain's best-known museum, containing one of the worlds finest art collections. It features works by such great Spanish painters as Francisco Goya, Bartolome' Murillo, and Diego Velazquez.
Spain shows the influence of various peoples who once controlled the country. some aqueducts, bridges and other structures built by the ancient Romans are still in use in Spain, and the ruins of other Roman structures can be seen throughout the country. Spain has about 1,400 castles and palaces, including the alcazars. El Escorial, a combination burial place, church, monastery, and palace, stands about 30 miles northwest of Madrid. It was built in the 1500's and is one of the world's largest buildings.
